Havila Voyages has taken delivery of HAVILA CASTOR

On Friday 22 April, Havila Voyages took delivery of its second ship, HAVILA CASTOR, at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey. HAVILA CASTOR will start sailing the coastal route Bergen - Kirkenes on Tuesday 10 May. 

HAVILA CASTOR is identical to its sister ship, HAVILA CAPELLA, which the company had delivery of in November 2021.

HAVILA CASTOR has a market value of around NOK 1.2 billion and is financed with equity and a loan of EUR 46 million from Tersan shipyard and the shipyard's bank. The loan is for a period of 3 months and means that the sanctioned GTLK has no security in it.

ABP completes ferry terminal upgrade work at the Port of Troon

Associated British Ports (ABP) has successfully completed the upgrade of the Port of Troon’s East Pier Ferry Terminal, with the work including the fitting of new berthing fenders and a suspended concrete deck. 

The Port of Troon’s ferry berth upgrade has been designed to accommodate both of CalMac’s ferries that currently maintain the Ardrossan-Brodick route – ISLE OF ARRAN and CALEDONIAN ISLES, as well as the newbuilding dual fuel LNG ferry GLEN SANNOX, which is expected in service in the second half of 2023.

Japan’s Naikai Zosen delivers FERRY TAKACHIHO to Miyazaki Car Ferry

Japan’s Miyazaki Car Ferry has taken delivery of its latest fleet addition – the ro-pax FERRY TAKACHIHO – from domestic shipbuilder Naikai Zosen, the first of two sisterships built to replace the 1997-built sisters KOBE EXPRESS and MIYAZAKI EXPRESS.

The two newbuildings are 24m longer than the vessels that they will replace, to provide for more freight capacity. FERRY TAKACHIHO will enter service in May on the Kobe-Miyazaki route.

Stena Line’s new Port of Immingham ro-ro freight terminal project reduced in size by 25%

Stena Line’s huge new freight ro-ro terminal project in Immingham, in association with Associated British Port’s (ABP) has been scaled back by 25%, from four berths to three, following analysis of responses, representations and a commissioned navigation simulation. 

Work on the GBP 100 million project is now pressing on for summer development consent order application, what will be the new Immingham Eastern RoRo Terminal.

ABP has agreed a 50 year partnership with Stena Line on this major expansion project, which is focused on the eastern flank of the UK’s busiest port, in terms on tonnage throughput.

The third of Celebrity Cruises five Edge-class vessels building at France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the 140,600 gt CELEBRITY BEYOND, left the Saint Nazaire shipbuilder on 15 April bound for Southampton, where she is scheduled to arrive on 21 April to prepare for her maiden passenger carrying voyage. The 3,937-passenger capacity vessel was handed over to Celebrity on 6 April and is an 21m longer upscaled version of earlier versions in the class.

Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation join forces in fleet decarbonisation programme

Wärtsilä is to deliver its new Decarbonisation Modelling Service to Carnival Corporation as the cruise group aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its fleet. Initially tasked with establishing an optimal decarbonisation path for the cruise ship REGAL PRINCESS, the project will expand to model solutions which could be applied to the entire Carnival fleet. The contract was signed in December 2021 and the project commenced in February 2022.

Eagerly awaited terminal will open new gateway to the Outer Hebrides

Stornoway’s eagerly awaited Deep Water Terminal will be ready to offer the cruise industry a new gateway to the Outer Hebrides ahead of the 2024 season.
Work on the transformational facility, with a minimum 10m alongside depth and able to accommodate vessels up to 360m in length, will start in the coming weeks, after Stornoway Port Authority signed a GBP 49million construction contract with building and civil engineering firm McLaughlin and Harvey.

• Starting this summer season and for the first time, MSC VIRTUOSA and MSC POESIA will be consistently using shore power at the ports of Southampton (UK) and of Rostock-Warnemünde (Germany).
• MSC Cruises has also signed an agreement with Cruise Baltic to achieve widespread use of shore power in the Baltic Sea region by 2024.
• MSC Cruises is ready to plug into more ports. Over half the fleet is projected to be shore power compatible by the end of 2022.
• On top of this, MSC Cruises’ first hybrid LNG ship operating with the largest solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) ever installed will be launching later this year - MSC WORLD EUROPA.

Stena Line and Yara Marine Technologies have signed a contract to install Yara Marine’s shore power solution on board four ferries as part of Stena Line's efforts to minimize carbon emissions from their fleet. When connected to the local power grid at the port, the turnkey solution will allow these vessels to eliminate emissions and noise that would otherwise have been produced by the vessels' engines.
