Hansa Destinations, Rederi AB Gotland’s new offshoot that will operate a three-times-weekly Nynäshamn-Rostock MoS, is set to start with a single ship at the end of next month.

As earlier reported, Hansa Destinations has been awarded a SEK 74,222,947 (EUR 7.8 million) Ecobonus from the Swedish government to move freight from the Swedish roads in general and the heavily trafficked southern Sweden-Mälardalen region road in particular to the sea. According to Rederi AB Gotland, the new route will allow up to 75,000 trucks to move from land to sea with emissions to be reduced by at least 20 per cent thanks to the modal shift.

DFDS starts its new Calais-Sheerness freight-only service

DFDS’s new daily Calais-Sheerness freight service started last night with the first commercial sailing of the 2,475-lanemetre MAXINE from Calais to Sheerness.

Aimed at pushing unaccompanied trailers away from Calais-Dover, the new service offers a congestion-free terminal in Sheerness with no standage fees for the first 48 hours. Sheerness benefits from close proximity to the M25 motorway, making access to the markets of London and the Midlands easy. The sailing schedule also supports intermodal connections from Italy, Spain and southern France into Calais.

Following the 29 June hand-over to Crystal Expedition Cruises, the Polar Code 6 luxury expedition yacht CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR left MW Werften in Stralsund, Germany, for Iceland on Saturday 10 July.

With a 1:1 crew to passenger ratio, the 164.50m long, 23.4m wide and 200-passenger capacity CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR is understood to be the most spacious luxurious expedition ship in the cruise industry.

TT-Line’s second ‘green’ ro-pax under construction at Jinling’s Yizheng facility has been floated out of the building dock, joining sister ship NILS HOLGERSSON alongside the outfitting quay.

Designed by OSK-ShipTech, the LNG-powered pair have a length of 229.4m and 31m, boasting a capacity of 4,600 lanemetres on four decks as well as 800 passengers. Two MAN 6L51/60DF and two 8L51/60DF main engines with a combined output of 29,400kW will give the vessels a 22-knot speed. Installed below the main deck, MAN Cryo supplied the twin Type C LNG Tanks which each have a capacity of 500m³.

Wallenius orders up to six PCTCs at CIMC Raffles

Wallenius has chosen the Chinese CIMC Raffles shipyard to build two 6,500-CEU PCTCS with an option for four more.

The vessels, designed by Danish naval architects Knud E. Hansen, will be 200m long by 37m beam and will have a 19-knot service speed. As an interim solution before implementing their innovative Oceanbird sail-equipped PCTC project, the new series will be equipped with a dual fuel engine and will run on LNG.

The Stena E-Flexer Class CÔTE D’OPALE, due to enter service on the Dover-Calais route early next month, arrived for the first time in her French homeport in the morning of Saturday 10 July.

Following berthing trials in both Calais' existing port and new port, CÔTE D'OPALE spent the rest of the weekend alongside in Calais before making her first appearance in Dover on 12 July. Prior to taking up commercial service in just over three weeks' time, she will be drydocked at Damen Shiprepair in Dunkerque.

On Thursday, July 1, Holland Shipyards Group officially handed over the new build, fully electric ferry SANDØY to Brevik Fergeselskap. The vessel will operate within the waters of Eidangerfjorden, Norway, connecting Brevik with Sandøya and Bjørkøya.

The SANDØY is a fully electric ferry measuring 42 m long and 11 m wide and has the capacity to transport 98 persons and 16 vehicles (cars). The vessel is completely emission-free and entirely powered by battery power with an installed capacity of 1.300 kWh. The SANDØY will be charged by means of a 600 kW shore charging facility, mostly during night.

On 9th July 2021, the world’s largest ice-rated multi-fuel RoRo vessel was launched at the CIMC Raffles shipyard in Yantai, China.

THE CONSTRUCTION of WALLENIUS SOL's new RoRo vessel reached a milestone when the record-breaking ship was launched on Friday 9th July amid much ceremony.
A little over a year has passed since construction began, and company CEO Ragnar Johansson followed the launch ceremony from afar due to the pandemic.

Volkswagen Group continues switch to low-emission logistics with LNG ships

Volkswagen is the first automaker to transport most of its new vehicles overseas using low-emission LNG ships (LNG – liquefied natural gas). After the first two LNG car carriers entered service in 2020, Volkswagen Group Logistics has now ordered four more ships with dual-fuel engines that can be powered with environmentally friendly liquid gas. They should be traveling the world’s oceans by the end of 2023, serving the North American route between Emden in Germany and Veracruz in Mexico. On the return trip, the LNG ships will transport new vehicles destined for Europe. Soon, six of the nine car carriers crossing the North Atlantic for Volkswagen will be powered by LNG.

Peab rebuilds ferry berths for electric ferries in Nordland

Peab has been commissioned to rebuild four ferry berths in northern Nordland. The customer is Statens vegvesen and the contract is worth NOK 301 million.
Peab will rebuild the ferry berths at Drag, Bognes and Skarberget as well as build a new ferry dock in Kjøpsvik. Four new charging stations will be installed with the accompanying technology infrastructure so that even electric ferries can dock there.

The technology group Wärtsilä, a pioneer in enabling the viability of LNG as a marine fuel, will provide the main and auxiliary engines, as well as the fuel storage and supply system, for a new Italian ferry designed to operate on LNG. Wärtsilä’s extensive experience in LNG applications, and its broad portfolio of related products, were cited as key considerations in the contract award. The vessel is under construction at the Sefine shipyard in Turkey and has been ordered by Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori, based in Milazzo, Italy. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in the first quarter of 2021.

Tallink’s new car and passenger ferry MYSTAR, which is under construction at Rauma Marine Constructions’ shipyard in Rauma, Finland, will be christened and floated out on 12 August 2021. The ship’s sponsor will be the President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid. The most environmentally friendly vessel to operate in the Baltic Sea is scheduled for delivery next year.

Full speed ahead for freight-friendly services to Spain - CAP FINISTERE returns to service

DFDS A/S: June volume report: Freight up 19% following lockdowns in 2020

Ferry – freight: Total volumes in June 2021 were 19.5% above 2020. Net adjustments for structural route changes reduced growth 2.7 ppt to 16.8%.

Ferry – passenger: The total number of passengers in June 2021 was 41.4% below 2020 reflecting the continued tight travel restrictions. Baltic Sea’s passenger volumes were above 2020.

Rolls-Royce and MAN Energy Solutions have signed an agreement for a strategic partnership that will see MAN's PBST brand distribute state-of-the-art mtu turbochargers. Stena Line aim to reduce emissions by 5 % using AI

During the last month the AI assistant Stena Fuel Pilot has been successfully introduced on two more Stena Line vessels, STENA FLAVIA and MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN. In total, seven Stena Line vessels now operate with AI assistance, with the aim to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 5 %.
