Baleària orders zero emission battery hybrid double-ender ferry for its Ibiza-Formentera route

In a first for the Spanish ferry operator, Baleària has ordered a zero emission battery hybrid double-ender ferry for its Ibiza-Formentera route from the northern Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Armón, based in Navia, Asturias.
The new hybrid ferry will be able to carry 350 passengers and 14 trucks and will be a zero emission vessel while entering and leaving port and manoeuvring. Delivery of the ferry is expected in time for the summer season 2023.
Höegh signs contract with China Merchants Heavy Industry to build a series of its zero carbon ready Aurora class vessels

Höegh Autoliners announced that it has entered into a contract with China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. (CMHI) for four fixed and eight optional 9,100 CEU capacity multi-fuel and zero carbon ready Aurora class vessels. Under the terms of the contract, the first two vessels will be delivered in the second half of 2024 and the next two vessels in the first half of 2025. In addition, Höegh Autoliners has options for another four plus four Aurora class vessels.
Stena Line and Associated British Ports sign GBP 100 million deal for new ferry terminal at the Port of Immingham

Stena Line and Associated British Ports (ABP) have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a new freight terminal at the Port of Immingham in the Humber region. The GBP 100 million agreement will see the Swedish ferry company operate the new terminal for the next 50 years. It is a major long-term commitment and boost for the region, where freight on routes to and from the EU has been booming since Brexit.
GSI delivers second of two ro-pax ferries for COSCO

On 18 January, Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in Nansha, China delivered the second of two 43,195gt ro-pax ferries to COSCO Group Passenger Shipping. The 208m long and 28.6m beam XIANG LONG DAO will be introduced on COSCO’s domestic Bohai Bay ferry service from Dalian to Yantai, together with its sister ship JI LONG DAO that was delivered in August last year.
Oma Baatbyggeri will supply hybrid battery-electric high-speed ferries to Norled AS for operation in Sogn.

Oma Baatbyggeri has signed a contract with Norled AS for the delivery of two hybrid battery-electric high-speed ferries. In the near future, a contract with Florø Skyssbåt AS will be signed for the delivery of another boat. The passenger capacity is 70, service speed is 22-25 knots and the length of the vessel is 30 meters.
Hai You Shipping Co., Ltd orders a CoCo Yachts Coastal Cruiser 400
Hai You Shipping Co., Ltd of Taiwan ordered its first CoCo Yachts designed and Glow Marine of Singapore-built fast ferry, a Coastal Cruiser 400.
The Coastal Cruiser 400 is specially designed for Hai You Shipping, and features a reversed bow, a length over all of 42.80m, a beam of 10.3m and will have a service speed of 35 knots.
Southern Hemisphere’s first fully electric passenger ferry launches in New Zealand
East by West Ferries has officially launched IKA RERE, New Zealand’s first fully electric, zero-emission passenger ferry, which will enter full service by the end of the first quarter of 2022.
The ferry will reduce CO2 emissions in Wellington and help the city achieve its aim of being carbon neutral by 2050.
Successful demonstration test of world’s first fully autonomous ship navigation systems on coastal ferry in Japan
The Nippon Foundation, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, and Shin Nihonkai Ferry have successfully completed a demonstration test of the world’s first fully autonomous ship navigation systems on the SOLEIL car ferry, conducted on the Iyonada Sea from Shinmoji, Kitakyushuu City, on 17 January.
STENA BALTICA begins its maiden voyage on Stena Line's Baltic Sea route between Nynäshamn and Ventspils

With the continued expansion of Stena Line's operations in the Baltic Sea, on 19 January the new STENA BALTICA had its maiden voyage on the Ventspils to Nynäshamn route. The ferry has been newly lengthened and refurbished. It is now 222 metres long and can accommodate 970 passengers in 202 cabins. The new STENA BALTICA has a freight capacity of 2,875 lanem, as well as an extra car deck.
Hybrid Uber boats to revolutionise sustainable river travel
Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is building the UK’s first hybrid high speed passenger ferries, set to launch in autumn 2022 and spring 2023. Leading the way in passenger boat design, the two new vessels, being built at Wight Shipyard on the Isle of Wight, take strides in improving the sustainability credentials of the business as well as propelling the wider marine sector.
Helsinki City Board approved the Port of Helsinki Ltd development programme in its meeting on 17 January 2022
The Port of Helsinki has prepared a nearly ten-year development programme based on the scenario review published in summer 2020. As a result of the development programme, passenger traffic to Tallinn and Stockholm will be centralised to West Harbour and Katajanokka, respectively. The arrangements of functions include changes to the areas and terminals of West Harbour and Katajanokka as well as the construction of the harbour tunnel from West Harbour to Länsiväylä Western Highway.
American Cruise Lines Unveils PROJECT BLUE: A New Fleet and Concept for Cruising the U.S.A.
American Cruise Lines revealed details of Project Blue—a brand new fleet of go-anywhere ships for the U.S. market. The company announced plans for 12 identical sister ships that will more than double the nation’s current capacity for domestic coastal cruises. Featuring an innovative hybrid catamaran design, these distinct boats will have unprecedented near-shore operating versatility.

Following an evaluation process during the first half of 2021, Hogia Ferry Systems came out on top and signed an agreement with the French-Corsican ferry operator Corsica Linea for delivery of the standard reservation and check-in system BOOKIT.
New records for freight volumes in Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port in Trelleborg
The freight flows increased in 2021 and more than 100,000 more freight units were handled in Port of Trelleborg, despite the ongoing pandemic. The largest increase can be noted in intermodal and conventional rail traffic. Port of Trelleborg was the only RoRo port in Sweden that had positive freight figures in 2020 and the upward trend continued in 2021. Forecasts ahead also point to a positive development.
Michelin continues to develop the WISAMO wing sail with Compagnie Maritime Nantaise - MN

Michelin and the Compagnie Maritime Nantaise - MN have just signed a partnership to test and co-develop the pioneering inflatable, retractable and automated wing sail solution on a first merchant ship.
A 100 sqm wing prototype is to be installed on Compagnie Maritime Nantaise - MN’s MN PELICAN. Thanks to this installation, the WISAMO wing will be tested in actual commercial maritime navigation conditions, contributing to the new technology’s industrial development phase, opening the door to trials using a larger wing sail, marking a great step toward decarbonizing maritime transport.

Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven: the aim is to secure the long-term future
The provisional insolvency administrators responsible for the future of the shipyard Lloyd Werft, Dr Christoph Morgen for the owning company and Dr Per Hendrik Heerma for the operating company, agreed on the further course of action in Bremerhaven: the common goal is to achieve the best possible purchase price for the owning company and to secure as many jobs as possible for the operating company.
Board vacancies at Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow)
Applications are being invited for a new Chair and two new non-executive directors for the board at Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow).
Current chair Alistair Mackenzie and board member John Hudson CBE are both stepping down from their roles for personal reasons. Their roles are being advertised along with an additional non-executive director position to strengthen the board’s commercial and legal expertise.
Freight volumes increase at the Port of Gothenburg despite the ongoing pandemic
The logistics system remains under extreme pressure as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has now entered its third year. Despite this, the Port of Gothenburg has weathered the storm well, reporting volume growth during the period and particularly during 2021. With a higher market share and its unique features and capabilities, the port has ensured that industry has continued access to the world.
Importance of cargo traffic transported via the Port of Helsinki to Finland confirmed
In 2021, a total of 14.4 million tonnes of goods (+8% compared to 2020) were transported via the Port of Helsinki, and unitized* cargo traffic reached an all-time high. The exceptional circumstances only served to confirm the importance of cargo traffic transported via the Port of Helsinki to Finland. In passenger traffic operations, the impact of the pandemic was even more evident compared to the previous year in the decrease in passengers.

VIKING CINDERELLA replaces GABRIELLA on the Helsinki - Mariehamn - Stockholm route during the period 17.01 - 08.02.2022 after the ladder suffered power outage and collided with the pier in the Port of Helsinki on Wednesday.
VIKING CINDERELLA is on GABRIELLA's timetable, but arrival times to Helsinki and Stockholm are adjusted.
