Baleària launched the electric ferry CAP DE BARBARIA

Baleària launched CAP DE BARBARIA, the first electric ferry in Spain on 28 September at the Armon Vigo Shipyard in a ceremony that included also the ship's baptism.

The ferry is scheduled to start linking Ibiza and Formentera in one hour in early summer 2023, with emission-free navigation in the ports, thanks to its electric propulsion. 

The ship is 82 meters long and 15.5 meters wide and will be able to navigate at up to 14 knots.

VIKING POLARIS delivered

Fincantieri has delivered in Søviknes (Norway) VIKING POLARIS, the second of two expedition vessels for Viking.

VIKING POLARIS, as well as her sister ship VIKING OCTANTIS, delivered last year, can host 378 guests in 189 staterooms. The ships have the “Polar Class 6” certification for expeditions in the polar regions.

The Moby-chartered ELIANA MARINO suffered machinery damages while servicing for Hansa Destinations on the Nynäshamn – Rostock route. A replacement was quickly found with CADENA 3, a somewhat larger vessel owned by CLdN.

On 28 September, Stena Line celebrated its 60th anniversary as a ferry company, having established itself as a trusted link between people, places and societies. When Sten A. Olsson, the founder of Stena Line, opened a shipping service from his hometown Göteborg to Skagen in Denmark in 1962, he did so with 20 years of entrepreneurial experience – as a scrap merchant.

Sicily Region's tender to build two ferries sees Fincantieri as sole contender

Only Fincantieri has come forward in response to the EUR 120 million tender launched by the Region of Sicily last spring for the construction of one ferry (with an option for a second vessel) to operate on the links with the smaller islands.

This was announced by the regional councilor for Infrastructure Marco Falcone, explaining that the tender “which will now be followed by due verification of the proposal and eventual awarding, also includes the option for a second ferry. For Sicily, this is a historic result because until now no one had ever laid the foundations to retire the 40-year-old ferries that are still circulating in our seas”.

Conversion of Hurtigruten’s RICHARD WITH to battery hybrid propulsion completed

Norwegian shipyard Myklebust Verft has successfully completed the complex six month conversion of Hurtigruten Norway’s Coastal Express vessel RICHARD WITH to a battery hybrid propulsion system. RICHARD WITH is the first of three sisterships to undergo this work, with KONG HARALD next inline at Myklebust Verft, followed by NORDLYS, although the shipyard to carry out this vessel’s conversion as yet to be named. NORDLYS, however, will be back in service for summer 2023.

There is great relief all round in New Zealand for both the Cook Strait ferry operator Interislander (owned by state-owned KiwiRail) and the nations freight hauliers, following the return to service of KAIARAHI after her mammoth port gearbox rebuilding project alongside in the port of Picton.

KAIARAHI sustained a catastrophic failure of her port gearbox in August 2021. In the gearbox failure, bearings and gears were damaged, with the warping of the gearbox casing. The unprecedented repair job not only involved engineers from the ferry and other specialists from New Zealand, but also spare part manufacturers in Europe and the US.

Austal Philippines launched Molslinjen’s EXPRESS 5

Austal Philippines has successfully launched the 115-metre EXPRESS 5 for Molslinjen of Denmark, which by gross tonnage is the largest ferry constructed by an Austal Shipyard.

The ‘Auto Express 115’ high-speed catamaran ferry was securely transported onto Austal Philippines’ floating dock by a new, rail-based system called ‘ANTS’, featuring self-drive trollies with variable geometry to suit any hull configuration.

STENA EBBA is the eight F-Flexer delivered from China Merchant Jinling (Weihai) shipyard and will become the fifth E-Flexer for Stena Line service.

At 240 metres in length, STENA EBBA and its sister STENA ESTELLE are 36 metres longer than STENA EDDA, STENA EMBLA and STENA ESTRID, the other three E-Flexers operated by Stena Line.

Rederij Doeksen introduce measures for Terschelling and Vlieland ferry service due to extreme fuel prices

The historically high fuel prices have a major impact on Rederij Doeksen's business operations. In particular, the exorbitant price increase of LNG, the fuel on which the two newest ferries of the shipping company use, is the reason the costs of maintaining the ferry connection with Terschelling and Vlieland are extremely high.

Boreal’s ferry KARLSØYFJORD now sails emission free between Molde and Vestnes, after completing a conversion from LNG to battery power. The owner Boreal Norge AS won the tender for ferry operations between Molde and Vestnes back in 2019, and in the fall that year work started on feasibility studies for using KARLSØYFJORD and its sister HARØYFJORD in this route. For both vessels the feasibility studies led to a shipyard bid package, a conversion design and a substantial engineering package.

Already added to half of the Carnival fleet, the stunning new livery now showcased on CARNIVAL LUMINOSA was introduced on MARDI GRAS in 2021, and features the red, white and blue hues long associated with Carnival Cruise Line. The ship also boasts a vintage funnel design reminiscent of the funnels on Carnival’s original ships like MARDI GRAS, CARNIVALE and FESTIVALE, which has also been painted with Carnival’s iconic colors.
