Photo above: Originally ordered by Tsokos Lines from Kanellos shipyard in Greece and launched as the PROTOPOROS XV, this vessel was sold on delivery at the end of 2019 to the Mumbai-based M2M Ferries. Renamed M2M-1, it serves their innovative shortcut ferry route from Mumbai to Mandwa on the Alibaug tourist resort. What was a 4-5 hour trip by road, is now a 1 hour crossing by ferry. M2M-1 is one of the many ships featured in the latest Shippax Designs, now being printed.

DFDS’ ro-pax AURA SEAWAYS has been delivered

AURA SEAWAYS, the first of two ro-paxes built at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for DFDS, has been delivered.
The 230m long vessel have a 4,500-lanemetre freight capacity with 250 cabins for drivers and passengers.
AURA SEAWAYS will be followed by LUNA SEAWAYS within a couple of months, both of which will sail on the Karlshamn-Klaipeda route.

Åland Provincial Government bought FEDJEFJORD from Norled

The Provincial Government of Åland has agreed with Norled to purchase the 2001-built FEDJEFJORD for future services on the Åva-Osnäs route.
FEDJEFJORD was built in 2001, is 64m long and can load about 40 cars and 130 passengers. It is planned to be put into operation on the Åva-Osnäs route when the ferry berth in Åva is ready for traffic during the first half of 2023.

Naikai Zosen launched Uwajima Unyu's REIMEI MARU

Uwajima Unyu's REIMEI MARU was launched at Naikai Zosen's Setoda shipyard, Japan. REIMEI MARU is set to enter service on the Yawatahama-Beppu route on June 23, 2022.
REIMEI MARU has a length of 120m and a capacity for 546 passengers and 160 cars.

Torghatten Nord secures a major ferry contract in Northern Norway

The Norwegian Road Authority (Statens Vegvesen) awarded Torghatten Nord with the Bodø - Røst - Værøy - Moskenes route, also known as the outer Vestfjord route.
This is the largest ferry contract awarded in Norway in 2022, with the winning bid reaching close to NOK 5bn for the 15-year operation between 2025 and 2040.

Swan Hellenic takes delivery of polar cruise vessel SH MINERVA from Helsinki Shipyard

Specialist expedition cruise operator Swan Hellenic has taken delivery of the first of three polar class expedition cruise vessels from Finland’s Helsinki Shipyard – the 152 passenger capacity 10,500 gt SH MINERVA on 3 December. The 113m vessel sailed from Helsinki for the Argentine port of Ushuaia to ready for her maiden cruise to Antarctica.
Stena Line to open new daily Sweden-Finland route

Stena Line announced that they will enter the Finnish market with a new daily route from Hanko in Finland to Nynäshamn in Sweden, a next step in Stena Line’s ambition to strengthen its position in the Baltic Sea. Starting with one ferry in February, the new route will be served with two vessels with daily departures from each port as of May 2022.

• Starts with bi-daily departures on 1 February 2022
• Full two-vessel operation with daily departures as of 1 May 2022
• Operated by vessels URD and STENA GOTHICA with 1,600 lane meters and 186 pax capacity each

A contract for electric ferry for Fullers360 of Auckland

Incat Crowther announced a contract to design an Incat Crowther 32 electric ferry for Fullers360 of Auckland, New Zealand. To be built by Q-West, the ferry will be the designer’s sixth from the builder and will join ten other Incat Crowther ferries in the Fullers360 fleet.
The vessel’s drivetrain consists of four Danfoss EM-PMI540-T4000 electric motors directly mounted to Hamilton HTX42 water jets, with a battery arsenal of 1944kWh to achieve maximum speeds over 28 knots and a service speed of 12 knots.
A future of cleaner air in the Baltic Sea

A new study shows that the use of OPS is increasing among the Baltic cruise ports. Some ports in the Baltic Sea region have decided to invest in shore power facilities, but several ports have not decided yet. However, four major cruise lines plan to have at least 56% of their overall fleet shore power ready before 2026.
Construction begins of Silversea Cruises SILVER NOVA

Silversea Cruises® has announced the name of its first ship, SILVER NOVA, developed as part of its innovative newbuild project known as Project Evolution, as well as the commencement of the ship’s construction at Meyer Werft in Papenburg.
SILVER NOVA is scheduled for delivery in summer 2023 and will be followed by a sister ship in 2024.
Volvo Penta and Danfoss Power Solutions partner to boost electrification in the marine sector
Volvo Penta and Danfoss' Editron division have established a partnership agreement to take the industry’s electromobility development to the next level. The partnership will help both companies take the next steps in sustainable power solutions to deliver the highest quality futureproof technology to customers. This news supports the Volvo Group’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative, made in May 2020. This announcement laid out the company’s next steps in adjusting and futureproofing in line with the ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement. Meanwhile, Danfoss is currently on an ambitious journey to become CO2 neutral in all of its global operations by 2030.
Austal completes sale of stake in Aulong joint venture
Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) announced the completion of the sale of its 40% shareholding in Aulong Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, Austal’s Joint Venture in Zhuhai, China, as initially indicated in the Company’s ASX announcement on 28 April 2021. Austal’s share in the joint venture was sold to its joint venture partner, Jianglong Shipbuilding Company (Jianglong) for approximately AU$4.2 million. Jianglong previously owned the other 60% shareholding in the joint venture company.
Wärtsilä partners with Microsoft to strengthen their Edge platform and industrialise Marine IoT
Wärtsilä Voyage has entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft. Wärtsilä Voyage is a market leader in maritime end-to-end onboard solutions with decades of experience and expertise in high-end marine Internet of Things (IoT) offerings. Now, through an integration with Microsoft Azure IoT Edge, the company plans to accelerate its efforts towards industrialising IoT for shipping through a highly scalable cyber-secure platform. The Wärtsilä platform will help the company and its partners deploy digital solutions to the market faster and more easily.
Mercy Ships and MAN Energy Solutions have signed cooperative agreement
After many years of collaboration Mercy Ships and MAN Energy Solutions extend their cooperative agreement. The new generous agreement means that MAN will continue supplying replacement parts for the hospital ship AFRICA MERCY.
