CLdN signs order for two hybrid ro-ro vessels

CLdN ro-ro have signed a contract with S. Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyards for two hybrid 8,000 lane meter ro-ro vessels, both of which will be delivered in the first half of 2025.

The new 234m long by 35m beam vessels, cargo wise, are modelled on the two 8,000 lane meter ships CELINE and DELPHINE which CLdN operates since 2017.

The new ships will be equipped with two LNG dual fuel main engines (MAN B&W ME-GI type) of 11MW each as well as two electric propulsion motors of 6MW each and twin screws. In full electric mode the ships can achieve a cruising speed of 16 – 17kn. Batteries with a 2.72 MWh capacity offer zero emissions in port. Compared with CLdN’s largest vessels currently in operation, the new ships will further reduce GHG emissions by 40% and will be NOx TIER III compliant.

The newest cruise ship in the Princess Cruises fleet – the 330m long DISCOVERY PRINCESS – was delivered 28 January during an official handover at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

The 3,660-guest DISCOVERY PRINCESS is the sixth and final Royal-Class newbuild and shares all of the style and luxury of her sister ships – ENCHANTED PRINCESS, SKY PRINCESS, MAJESTIC PRINCESS, REGAL PRINCESS and ROYAL PRINCESS.

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) has taken delivery of the cruise vessel WONDER OF THE SEAS from French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique, which at 236,857 gt makes it the largest cruise vessel in the world. 

WONDER OF THE SEAS is the fifth and largest of RCI’s Oasis-class vessels and will enter service on 4 March, undertaking a series of cruises from Fort Lauderdale, before re-crossing the Atlantic in April to start a summer season of Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona and Civitavecchia. In November the vessel will return to the US to start a yearlong season of cruises from Port Canaveral.

As its sisters in the Oasis-class, the new cruise giant measures 362m in length and has 18 decks, 16 for passenger use, capable of carrying a maximum of 6,988 passengers in 2,867 cabins and suites, looked after by a crew of 2,300.

New start-up British cruise line Ambassador, based in Purfleet, Essex, has bought its second vessel – the 47,275 gt 1999-built AIDAMIRA from Costa Cruises, for whom she operated for subsidiary AIDA Cruises.

To be renamed AMBITION, it will hold a 1,200-passenger capacity and is scheduled to enter service during summer 2023, joining Ambassador’s first vessel AMBIENCE, ex SATOSHI.

Ballard Announces Delivery of Two Class Approved FCwaveTM Modules to Norled A/S

Ballard Power Systems has delivered two, 200 kilowatt (kW) FCwaveTM modules to Norled A/S. The fuel cell modules will power the world’s first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry, HYDRA, later this year.

HYDRA will be the first hydrogen-powered ship to be approved by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate, the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB) and DNV. The vessel has a capacity of up to 300 passengers and 80 cars and will sail on the triangular route between Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik in Norway.

The AFRICA MERCY Returns to Dakar to Resume Surgery

The President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr. Macky SALL is pleased to announce that the AFRICA MERCY has returned as promised to continue the surgical operations and training that were interrupted in March 2020 by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ship’s presence is expected to last until November 2022.

Brunvoll Azimuth Propulsion Thrusters and Auto-Crossing for new Fjord1 ferries

Brunvoll has signed a contract with Tersan Shipyard for the delivery of azimuth propulsion units and control systems for autonomous operation of two electrical double ended shuttle ferries for Fjord1. The sister ferries are designed by HAV Design and will operate routes between Stranda – Liabygda and Eidsdal – Linge in Norway.

Color Line resumes operations on the Oslo-Kiel and Sandefjord-Strømstad routes

Due to the eased the covid restrictions, Color Line will resume operations on the routes between Oslo and Kiel and Sandefjord and Strømstad. The decision means that all four ships that have been taken out of service will resume their sailings, and that the company's approximately 950 laid off employees will gradually return to work.

On 1 February 2022, we saw the first ferry on Stena Line’s new route Nynäshamn-Hanko set sail towards Finland. The vessel URD left Nynäshamn/Stockholm Norvik Port after an inauguration ceremony with a small group of guests from business and politics. Starting with three departures per week, the link Nynäshamn-Hanko will soon switch to a daily schedule, when the ferry STENA GOTHICA joins its sister vessel in the beginning of May.

ABB technology ensures fast charging for Amsterdam’s new electric ferries

ABB power conversion technology ensures a stable power supply for the fast-charging units serving five new electric ferries on the round-the-clock services crossing Amsterdam’s North Sea Canal. The new ferries have been ordered by the city’s public transport company, Gemeentelijk vervoerbedrijf (GVB), as an important step in its strategy to become a sustainable, emission-free transportation company. By 2023 they will completely replace the existing diesel-powered fleet that dates back to the 1930s.

Norsepower has been granted Approval in Principle for its Rotor Sail technology solution from classification society, RINA. The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernised version of the Flettner rotor – a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind energy to propel a ship, allowing the main engine to be throttled back to improve fuel efficiency and to obtain a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, without compromising the service speed.

TotalEnergies and Veolia signed an agreement to recover biomethane from Veolia's waste-processing facilities and wastewater treatment plants in more than 15 countries, and to invest together in these projects.

Hy2gen, an international company specialized in designing, building and operating facilities to produce green hydrogen and green hydrogen-based derivatives, plans to produce green ammonia as a fuel for the maritime sector, in the municipality of Sauda, on the southwestern coast of Norway.

AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for January 2022

In January 2022 AS Tallink Grupp transported 181,687 passengers, which is an 50.0% increase compared to January 2021. The number of cargo units increased by 14.4% to 31,213 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 9.0% to 40,808 units in the same comparison.

The Supervisory Board of AS Tallink Grupp has extended the term of office of members of the Management Board Piret Mürk-Dubout, Kadri Land and Harri Hanschmidt. Kadri Land and Harri Hanschmidt joined the company’s Management Board on 4 February 2019 and their terms of office have been extended by three years, effective from 5 February 2022.

Bergen successfully runs engine on H2 blend with no hardware changes

Bergen Engines recently launched a comprehensive test programme towards zero carbon emission engines, allowing a gradual transition from liquid natural gas to 100% green hydrogen fuel, as and when it becomes commercially available.
The first tests on a B-Series Bergen gas engine, running on a blend of 15 %v hydrogen and 85 %v natural gas, have been successfully completed without any hardware adjustments.

Inmarsat Ferry Open Innovation Challenge launched

Mobile satellite communications provider, Inmarsat has joined forces with the largest Passenger Shipping Group in Greece, Attica Group, and digital consultancy, Thetius, to launch the ‘Inmarsat Ferry Open Innovation Challenge: crew training and entertainment’.
