Fred. Olsen Express to add BARLOVENTO EXPRESS to its fleet
High-speedFred. Olsen Express has added a new fast ferry to its fleet, which will begin service next December. BARLOVENTO EXPRESS is designed to meet the connections between the islands scheduled for 2025, the year in which Fred. Olsen plans not only to maintain its current services but also to operate the new route that will connect El Hierro with Tenerife, starting on 31 December, in addition to meeting the demand for such important festivities as the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes, in El Hierro, and the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves, in La Palma.
The new addition will be called BARLOVENTO EXPRESS and will cover the route connecting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura. With this, Fred. Olsen's fleet will consist of a total of eight high-speed ferries, three mini-ferries and two ships for the transport of goods, with which it will operate seven inter-island shipping lines and a coastal route in the south of La Gomera. In addition, it links the archipelago with the peninsula by connecting Gran Canaria and Tenerife with Huelva.
The CEO of Fred. Olsen, SA, Andrés Marín, has highlighted “the important commitment that the company has been making to the territorial cohesion of the archipelago in recent months, with services that guarantee the maritime connectivity of all the islands. In addition to the recent integration of two new ro-ro vessels, intended for the transport of goods, there is the new connection with the island of El Hierro and now, in addition, the incorporation of this additional vessel.”
For his part, the fleet director of Fred. Olsen Express, Juan Ignacio Liaño, explained that “this new fast ferry helps us to guarantee our services, allowing us to respond to the necessary reinforcements in periods of high demand, as well as being able to deal with the planned schedule of mandatory technical stops without affecting the rest of the connections. In this way, we will continue to maintain our commitment to the inhabitants of each of the islands.”
Fred. Olsen Express makes an average of 22,000 trips per year and transports more than 3.5 million people, more than 63,000 pets, around one million passenger vehicles and around 1,300,000 lane metres of cargo, or around 100,000 freight vehicles. Since its inception, more than 86 million passengers have travelled with the company.
BARLOVENTO EXPRESS is the former Trasmediterránea CIUDAD DE CEUTA, sold to Liberty Lines in early November this year and renamed VITTORIO M and now long term chartered to Fred. Olsen Express.
