Fred. Olsen strengthens its fleet with two new ro-ro ships
Ro-roFred. Olsen incorporates two new ro-ro ships to strengthen its fleet, the first of which is expected to be operational at the beginning of May between Gran Canaria and the eastern islands.
Fred. Olsen’s CEO, Andrés Marín, says, “the two new ships will allow us to better meet the high demand for this type of service that we have in the Canary Islands. We are aware of the particularities that our territory has and the crucial role that maritime connectivity plays in the supply of the different islands. It is important to keep in mind that, being an archipelago and due to the complexity of the movement of most loads in terms of weight, dimensions or quantity, only thanks to maritime transport can we ensure the arrival of sufficient stocks of merchandise.
The two unnamed scrubber equipped ships are believed to be the FINNHAWK and FINNKRAFT, both bought from the Grimaldi Group.
Currently, Fred. Olsen moves nearly 1,300,000 lane meters of cargo annually, that is, about 100,000 freight transport vehicles. With this reinforcement, it is expected to increase these figures considerably, while maintaining the commitment to improve the travel experience of carriers and passengers.
The first of the ships will be delivered during the month of April and is expected to enter service in May of this year, between Gran Canaria and the eastern islands. While for the second ship, work is being done to bring forward its arrival and be able to have it sailing between the islands before the end of the year, with the possibility of also connecting other territories.
