Solar power to supply energy for Alslinjen’s new electric ferry

FerryMolslinjen is now investing in a new 132,000 MWh solar park on Djursland to power the new NERTHUS electric ferry currently being built at Cemre Shipyard for service by Alslinjen on the Bøjden to Fynshav route. The investment is an important step towards Molslinjen's vision of emission-free operation by 2040.

From the spring of 2025, for the next 10 years, the park will supply power to, among others, Molslinjen, which will use the renewable energy for the operation of the future electric ferry NERTHUS on the Alslinjen between Bøjden and Fynshav.

"We cannot send the production from the solar park directly to Als - but we contribute to increasing the total amount of renewable energy in the electricity grid, at the same time as we use a corresponding amount of power on Als when the new electric ferry arrives on the route around the turn of the year", says Molslinjen's managing director, Kristian Durhuus.

Molslinjen, together with two other companies, must purchase the renewable energy through a so-called PPA agreement, which has been entered into with Energi Danmark. The agreement runs for 10 years. NRGi Renewables is building the park, which is scheduled to be in operation from spring 2025.

"We are proud of our collaboration with Molslinjen, which with this PPA demonstrates their commitment to promoting additionality and supporting the development of new renewable energy. We look forward to continuing the journey towards a greener future together," says Claus Holck Hertz, Senior Energy Risk Advisor at Energi Danmark.

"This kind of collaboration and technological innovation is crucial to achieving the ambitious climate goals. By investing in ground-breaking solutions and partnerships, we accelerate the transition to a fully sustainable future - both for our company and for society as a whole", adds Kristian Durhuus.

The 117-metre-long NERTHUS will be prepared for autonomous sailing between ports – with automatic docking and charging at the quay and will have Echandia batteries with a 3.1 MWh capacity which can be fully charged in 20-25 minutes. Capacity will be for 188 cars and 600 passengers.

Cemre will also build a sister ship for Molslinjen, TYRFING, destined for Samsølinjen with a slightly larger battery capacity at 3.8 MWh for the longer Ballen - Kalundborg route.
