WALLENIUS SOL launches biogas offering

Ro-roAs part of its ongoing commitment to build a sustainable maritime infrastructure, WALLENIUS SOL is introducing a new offer that enables customers to 'Lighten the Load' and purchase biogas corresponding to their transport's fuel consumption.

“It might seem odd for us as a shipping company to encourage our customers to 'lighten the load'. But in this case, we’re talking about lightening our impact on the planet and transitioning to renewable fuels,” says Elvir Dzanic, CEO, WALLENIUS SOL.

Meeting the growing demand for renewable fuels

There is a growing demand from companies striving to meet the climate goals and switch to renewable fuels. WALLENIUS SOL shares this commitment and now offers liquefied biogas (LBG) as a fuel option for sea transport. Customers will benefit from an ISCC-certified product that meets strict sustainability and traceability standards, helping them reduce their carbon footprint while lowering ETS costs.

“For us, the entire supply chain is critical, as we recognise that reducing environmental impact is a collaborative effort,” says Rebecca Tagaeus, Sustainability Manager at WALLENIUS SOL. “By enabling our customers to choose the proportion of biogas they wish to use, we facilitate a gradual transition away from fossil fuels. Even a small step today is better than no step at all.”

Up to 100 percent biogas

Using the mass balance principle, customers can select the proportion of LBG relative to their fuel consumption – from 10, 25, 50, 75, to 100 percent biogas. The selected amount of biogas is liquefied, mixed with LNG, and incorporated into the overall fuel mix.

New low-emission ro-ro ships

In 2022, WALLENIUS SOL took delivery of the world’s largest ice-classed con-ro vessels with multi-fuel capabilities. BOTNIA ENABLER and BALTIC ENABLER. These vessels, which lead their class in both cargo capacity and gas tank volume, were designed to, by running on LNG, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 63%, compared to older diesel-powered vessels. The Enabler vessels are ranked at the top of the ro-ro 1A Super category for the lowest CO2 emissions per tonne per nautical mile, according to EMSA’s MRV report.

"At our own expense, we have already begun blending a small amount of biogas into our fuel mix. Together with our customers, we can accelerate the transition to renewable fuels. This is a natural step forward to fulfill our vision as logistical pioneers with an industrial mindset," says Rebecca Tagaeus.
