ForSea - far from normal, but constantly increasing

For a little more than a year we have lived in the pandemic. A year when ForSea has tirelessly sailed on to maintain the link between Sweden and Denmark and thereby ensure both transport of goods and commuters' journey to work, but also for those who want to break everyday life with a trip and tickle the holiday nerve. It is still a bit left to normal, but it is gratifying that there is an increase in travel.

High pressure on the freight side

Above all, the freight side shows a good increase. March became a well-trafficked month with regard to the number of trucks. Just under 41,400 trucks crossed the strait with ForSea. A figure that has not been higher since May 2018. "The increase clearly shows the importance of a functioning crossing and that industry and operations in our society run at high pressure, despite the pandemic," says Kristian Durhuus, CEO of ForSea.

The crofters took away Christmas

Since March 31, it is allowed for the "crofts", Danish cottage owners, to visit their summer places in Sweden. Many took the opportunity to visit their cottages during Easter, which they have not had the opportunity to do since Christmas. "We were told about Christmas decorations that could now finally be taken down and water pipes that fortunately did not leak," says Alexander Gerencser, Head of Food & Beverage. The number of traveling crofters during Easter was just over 3,000, twice as many compared to the same period in 2020. This despite the fact that they now have self-isolation for two weeks when returning to Denmark.

Break everyday life with a "tura" - an activity that increases

Many people miss traveling and are looking for alternatives to breaking everyday life and finding activities and excursions that can be carried out in line with the restrictions and recommendations we all live under. At ForSea, there was a 45% increase in the “tura” segment compared to 2020. “Throughout the pandemic, we have worked to create a safe environment for both staff and our travelers. We are proud of the work we have done and are sure that the increase is probably due both to the fact that people in general have begun to find a way to relate to the pandemic, while we believe that passengers feel safe with us during their "tura". Otherwise we would not have been able to welcome them back or see the increase we are actually making. "Tura" is a tradition that we are happy to see increase again, "says Kristian Durhuus, CEO.

The Helsingør-Helsingborg crossing is the region's floating bridge consisting of the five ferries AURORA, TYCHO BRAHE, HAMLET, MERCANDIA IV and MERCANDIA VIII. The ferries are environmentally friendly and equipped with catalysts. In addition to this, AURORA and TYCHO BRAHE have both been converted to battery operation for a total investment cost of approximately SEK 300 million. INEA, an administrative body for innovation and networks within the EU, has supported the investment with approximately SEK 120 million. In 2019, ForSea transported 7.0 million passengers and 1.3 million cars, 440,000 trucks and 16,000 buses. This corresponds to 20% of the vehicles that crossed the Öresund in 2019. The crossing promotes integration and growth in the Öresund region and is run by 600 employees who work daily for a safe and efficient connection between Sweden and Denmark with the aim of making travel as comfortable as possible.
