SALAMANCA to sail through the Suez Canal and set sail for Spain

Brittany Ferries' first LNG vessel, the SALAMANCA, left the Weihai shipyard in China on December 10. It is expected in Bilbao, Spain on January 12. During this trip, it will have covered 10,322 nautical miles [19,116 kilometers] in 33 days, or 20 times the distance between Portsmouth and Bilbao, the route on which it will be put into service on March 27, 2022.

215 meters long with a cruising speed of 23 knots, the SALAMANCA can accommodate 1,015 passengers and is equipped with 341 cabins. In the generous public spaces spread over two decks, a restaurant, tapas bar, shop, bar and lounges welcome travelers.

Brittany Ferries is proud to welcome this beautiful vessel which offers even more comfort, modernity and space to our passenger and freight customers on the Channel and the Bay of Biscay. The SALAMANCA will be the first ship in our fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas and one of the very first to sail in French and British waters. By 2025, Brittany Ferries will have three other new LNG-fueled e-flexer ships. This is a major environmental step for Brittany Ferries, which is continuing its efforts to reduce its ecological footprint and pave the way for sustainable maritime transport. ”, Christophe Mathieu, CEO of Brittany Ferries.

Approaching the Suez Canal

The SALAMANCA will reach the port of Suez, at the southern end of the canal, on New Year’s Day and cross it on January 2.

By taking the Suez Canal which connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, the SALAMANCA and her crew will gain 10 days of navigation compared to the route further south, which passes through the Cape of Good Hope, at the tip of the Africa.

A first LNG for Brittany Ferries crews

Embarked in Singapore, part of the Brittany Ferries crew discovered the SALAMANCA and familiarized themselves with its operation.

LNG, which is more virtuous than traditional fuels, allows more efficient combustion, without sulfur and almost without particles, as well as an 85% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions and 20% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Entry into the fleet of an LNG-powered vessel requires specific training for crew members. The latter has already been given to them on a simulator at the Brittany Ferries Atalante training center in Saint-Malo.

As part of a contract between Brittany Ferries and Repsol, the LNG supply to the SALAMANCA and then to its sister ship, the SANTOÑA scheduled to arrive in 2023, will be provided by a dockside storage system in Brittany Ferries' two Spanish ports, Santander and Bilbao.
