Discover Ferries welcomes a new Chair and Vice Chair
Industry body, Discover Ferries, has appointed Peter Griffiths and Jo Harvey as the new chair and vice chair. The organisation represents 13 passenger ferry operators to proactively promote ferry travel to consumers and share industry best practice.
Peter Griffiths is responsible for brand and marketing at Caledonian MacBrayne, the UK’s largest ferry fleet which services 50 routes with 35 vessels on the west coast of Scotland. Working in marketing and communications since the 1990s, he has delivered several award-winning campaigns in sectors including tourism and renewables. Griffiths has also worked as a trustee on several Boards in the culture sector. He is experienced in building positive relationships with communities and stakeholders, knowledge he looks to bring to Discover Ferries.
Griffiths took up the position of vice chair at Discover Ferries in December 2022 and the organisation has since benefited enormously from his insight into the domestic ferry market. He will be supported by Jo Harvey, Customer and Marketing Director at P&O Ferries, who takes on the role of Vice Chair.
Harvey has just over a year of experience in the ferry sector having previously worked extensively in the hospitality industry. In addition to representing an international operator view, she is keen to showcase the rich experiences ferry travel offers, which will help the industry grow.
The outgoing chair, Nigel Wonnacott, who is also Group Head of External Communications at Brittany Ferries, handed the role over to Griffiths at the organisation’s quarterly member meeting held in Dublin on 20th September. He has steered the organisation since 2020 alongside Director Abby Penlington, leading communications and marketing campaigns to champion the benefits of ferry travel.
Peter Griffiths, Chair of Discover Ferries, says: I want to thank Nigel for his leadership over the past three years and his continuing commitment as a Discover Ferries member. During the most challenging times the travel industry has faced, he and Abby have ensured the ferry sector’s voice is heard – a platform I want to build on.
“We are entering an interesting time for the market. Travellers have always sought good value, but sustainability and authentic travel experiences are influencing choices. The ferry industry is well positioned to meet these consumer needs and, as Chair, I look forward to working alongside Abby, Jo, Nigel and the other members to communicate the joy of ferry travel to new and existing audiences.”
Jo Harvey, Vice Chair of Discover Ferries, comments: “I am thrilled to be taking on the responsibility of Vice Chair at Discover Ferries. I truly believe that providing customers with great experiences on board, whether that be through food, drink, entertainment or just brilliant customer services, will keep them coming back time and time again. We really need to remind travellers that ferries are an exceptional way to travel and talk to them about the benefits over other means of transport, and I am really looking forward to helping drive this change in mindset during my time as Vice Chair.”
