Reopening of Scandinavia's largest RoRo port

After being a building and construction site for several years, Trelleborg's new port is finally ready. On April 5, this will be celebrated by inaugurating the port's four new ferry berths, together with Minister of Infrastructure Tomas Eneroth. Since the port expansion started, the Port of Trelleborg has extended Sweden by 550 meters south, built 3 km long new breakwaters, used 600,000 tons of stone taken by sea from Halmstad, dredged 1.7 million cubic meters, created 50 hectares of new land where there was previously sea and there are now 5,400 meters of quay in the harbor.

The investment and expansion of the Port of Trelleborg makes it possible to meet future volume increases of freight, significantly increase capacity with intermodal freight transport, freight by rail and the ability to receive the next generation of RoRo vessels, so-called Green Ships, with significantly less climate impact but significantly greater capacity.

- It is really fun that the investments and efforts we have made so far are now reality and no vision anymore. We are now looking forward to welcoming TT-Line's first Green Ship NILS HOLGERSSON during the second quarter. Without our new ferry berths, it would not have been possible to receive such large vessels. Together with our shipping customers TT-Line, Stena Line and Unity Line, we have designed the new port to cope with a capacity increase of increased freight volumes and passenger traffic in the future, says CEO Jörgen Nilsson, Port of Trelleborg.

The Port of Trelleborg is Scandinavia's largest RoRo port, one of Sweden's five core ports and Sweden's only port with railway ferries. The port is an important node for Sweden's imports and exports, and thus has an important significance and role for Sweden's climate changeover of freight transport 2030/2045. The port strengthens Sweden's core ports' capacity and the TEN-T networks that the port is part of.

The guest list for the inauguration on 5 April includes representatives from government agencies, core ports and the business community linked to shipping and logistics. During the inauguration, the Port of Trelleborg and representatives of Sweden's other four core ports describe their importance for Sweden's climate change and trade, as well as the importance of strengthening and increasing the capacity of intermodal freight transport, ie integrated transport between road, rail and shipping.

The port's relocation provides space for Sjöstaden

As an important goods node and gateway to southern Sweden, Trelleborg is specifically designated as a regional core. The strategic situation in the Öresund region with proximity to the rest of Europe must be taken advantage of. In a cohesive urban development project, Kuststad 2025, new housing is planned in Sjöstaden and a modern business area with a unique location for logistics operations.

- A ring road around the city and an eastern harbor entrance with parking areas outside the harbor area benefit the harbor's growth. A strengthened infrastructure is also an absolute prerequisite for the city's development and for the establishment of new, innovative companies, says Fredrik Geijer, municipal director, Trelleborg municipality.
