Strong recovery in Sweden for international ferry traffic in the second quarter
During the second quarter of 2022, the total number of passengers in Swedish ports was 6.8 million, an increase of 105 percent compared to the same quarter in 2021. The rate of increase was significantly higher for foreign traffic than for Gotland ferries, which had an increase of 22 percent. Passenger traffic to and from Finland increased by over 300 percent and contributed the most to the total increase, according to new preliminary official statistics from Trafikanalys.
- We see that ferry traffic to and from foreign ports has brought back some of the loss of passengers that we saw at the beginning of the pandemic. However, travel is still around 20 percent below pre-pandemic levels. At its lowest, in the second quarter of 2020, ferry travel was between 70 and 80 percent below normal levels. The ports' freight handling was not affected as much as passenger traffic and is roughly at the same levels as before the pandemic, says Henrik Petterson, project manager at Trafikanalys.
The number of passengers in international traffic has increased significantly more than in domestic traffic, +131 percent increased international traffic, from 2.5 million to 5.8 million passengers compared to the same period last year. Traffic to and from Finland contributed the most to the increase, with 1.2 million more passengers than in 2021. The Öresund traffic contributed the second most, with 921,000 more passengers.
Number of passengers in domestic traffic, i.e. mainly traffic to and from Gotland, increased by 23 percent, from 404,000 to 499,000 travellers.
The total amount of goods unloaded and loaded in Swedish ports increased slightly, by 1.5 percent, from 43.3 to 44.0 million tons.
Due to seasonal variations during the year, increases and decreases are reported as changes in quarter 2 2022 compared to quarter 2 2021, and thus not to quarter 1.
The statistics include all Swedish ports with ships with a gross tonnage of at least 20, which call in commercial traffic; to load/unload goods or drop off/pick up passengers. Domestic goods and passengers are counted twice in reported statistics, this to measure the total activity in the ports. Cruise ship passengers included.
