Baleària President Adolfo Utor
Baleària wins the contract for the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route
FerryBaleària has been awarded the contract to operate the intercontinental shipping line between Tarifa and Tangier Ville, following the opening of the financial offers and the evaluation of the techniques last Friday. Baleària has submitted the most sustainable and innovative offer to the competition, with an investment of EUR 135 million in the construction of two zero-emission electric fast ferries with capacity for 800 passengers, the electrification of the ports and the battery recharging system. The construction of these two electric catamarans will be carried out at Astilleros Armon in Gijón and will last two and a half years.
Baleària President Adolfo Utor believes that "Baleària has presented the most sustainable and technologically advanced project of the three that have participated in the competition," and states that it is good news for Spain and Morocco and also for the shipping company which, after almost 20 years of aspiring to operate and modernise this route, has managed to win with a powerful solution and economic offer.
It should be noted that the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras reported on Friday the numerical result of the technical and operational offers for the award of berth number 3 of the port of Tarifa and announced the economic offers and traffic commitments for the entire period of the concession, which have a mathematical and automatic score, a circumstance that allows the winning calculation to be made.
Of the three sections into which the tender is divided, Baleària has won in the two that have objective criteria (technical and economic) and in the section based on subjective criteria (operation) the shipping company has had a slightly lower score than the two other companies presented. The economic offer presented is, in addition, the most advantageous for the APBA.
Adolfo Utor points out that "pending official confirmation, we can conclude that Baleària has been the clear winner of the tender: a Spanish shipping company with two Spanish-built electric boats." Utor also states that "the commercial and technological strength displayed by Baleària will generate greater wealth for the region and will favour an increase in economic and cultural activity in both Andalusia and Tangier."
