GOTLAND HYDROCAT - The world’s first large-scale hydrogen powered catamaran
High-speedGotlandsbolaget launched its GOTLAND HYDROCAT ferry concept, the world’s first large-scale, high-speed catamaran powered by fossil free hydrogen. This the second vessel in the Horizon Series – Gotland Company’s concept for next generation vessels.
The Horizon series of high-speed passenger and cargo vessels was launched as a concept in 2021, with GOTLAND HORIZON leading the way. Both GOTLAND HYDROCAT and GOTLAND HORIZON have been developed with the purpose of minimizing emissions from shipping. The two concept models will be able to offer even faster, more flexible and more sustainable crossings.
“We don’t think Gotland should have to choose between crossing times and reduced climate impact, which is why we’re developing next-generation vessels in the Horizon series. The purpose of the Horizon Series is to employ new technology to achieve an even better service and capacity while at the same time drastically reduce emissions,” explains Håkan Johansson, CEO of Gotland Company.
“It’s fantastic that we now have two concept vessels for our future fleet that will bring Gotland even closer to mainland Sweden while our emissions are radically reduced, comments Marcus Risberg, CEO of Destination Gotland.
Gotland Company has set a goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2045. One of the key initiatives for achieving this goal – Destination Zero – is the development of next-generation vessels.
“The Horizon series is our single most important initiative for reducing the climate impact of shipping. We have a long tradition of using the latest technology and we constantly modernize our fleet,” says Håkan Johansson.
The vessels are designed to be powered by fossil-free hydrogen, whose primary emission is water vapor. However, both vessels have a multi-fuel solution which allows them to be run on other fossil-free fuels with a relatively simple adjustment.
The work on developing all the necessary technology continues, and the ambition is to be able to order GOTLAND HYDROCAT by 2025 and have it in service by 2030. The model and the design of GOTLAND HYDROCAT have been developed by Gotland Company in partnership with Austal, one of the world’s leading shipyards for catamaran design and production.
