Ostseestaal builds electric passenger ship for Lake Constance
Ostseestaal GmbH & Co. KG has been commissioned by the shipping company Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH (BSB) based in Constance (Baden-Württemberg) to build an electric solar passenger ship.
The fully electric catamaran, 30 meters long and 8 meters wide, is currently in the construction phase.
The ship is scheduled to go into service as early as July 2022, with an option for a second ship at the end of 2022. “With this passenger ship for use on Lake Constance, we are entering new dimensions in the field of electric solar ships. The capacity of 300 passengers exceeds all electric ferries and passenger ships designed and implemented by Ostseestaal ”, emphasizes Dr. Thomas Kühmstedt, Technical Director of Ostseestaal.
The passenger ship for the shipping company BSB is a very demanding shipbuilding contract for Ostseestaal. According to Ingo Schillinger, the responsible manager at Ostseestaal, the company is breaking new ground with this project.
The company has so far delivered ten electric solar ships, including the SANKTA MARIA II, the world's first fully electric car ferry for inland waters, which runs on the Mosel between Germany and Luxembourg.
Two projects are currently under construction with an electric passenger ferry for Usedom and an electric catamaran ferry for the city of Rostock, both of which will be delivered this year.
The company recently won a Europe-wide tender for the production of three electric passenger ships for the Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG).
