ForSea’s TYCHO BRAHE is now upgraded with the world's largest battery pack

In 2018, the first conversion to battery operation was carried out of the ferries TYCHO BRAHE and AURORA to the world's largest battery-powered ro-pax ferries. A pioneering project that has been fringed by both progress and setbacks; just as pioneering efforts are usually done. To this day, ForSea has the world's largest battery pack on a high-frequency ferry. AURORA has sailed to 93% on electricity during the past year and contributed with major environmental gains in the region for both air and sea. During the year, TYCHO BRAHE has undergone a major upgrade process where all battery packs have now been replaced in order to be able to store more energy and double the lifespan of the battery pack from 5 to 10 years.

ForSea has updated the energy storage system on board TYCHO BRAHE, increasing the battery capacity from 4,160 kWh to 6,400 kWh, without requiring additional space on board the vessel. By increasing the battery capacity on board TYCHO BRAHE by 50%, ForSea can now further reduce emissions, benefiting the local environment and passengers. ForSea has hereby completed yet another major project that means major environmental benefits for the entire Öresund region, including reduced CO2 emissions by over 70% per year (compared to the base year 2016), which corresponds to an annual reduction of 26,000 tons of CO2. TYCHO BRAHE’s upgraded energy system and battery pack reinforces the vision of sustainable transport and sea travel, realized through innovation and commitment.

The Danish and Swedish governments' respective goals of 70% CO2 reduction for the year 2030, ForSea already achieves in autumn 2022 on the Helsingborg-Helsingör ferry line.

Facts about ForSea’s battery operation

- The battery operation of the ships is a very innovative system that required major adjustments both on board and ashore. A fully automatic laser-guided robotic arm connects to the ferries for charging each time they are in port. The ferries are powered solely by green electricity from wind, water and sun. One charge is sufficient for the crossing in twenty minutes. With the electric drive, the noise level and vibrations are also significantly reduced, which is positive for passengers, local residents and marine life.

- ForSea has the world's two largest battery-powered ferries on a high-frequency ferry line and TYCHO BRAHE has the world's largest battery pack.

- CO2 emissions have been reduced by 65,000 tonnes since AURORA and TYCHO BRAHE were converted to battery operation in September 2018.

- With full battery operation of two ferries, the shipping company's total CO2 emissions are reduced by at least 70% annually (approx. 26,000 tons).

- 93% of all crossings with Aurora in 2022 have been carried out with battery operation

- 97% of all trips with the ferries AURORA and TYCHO BRAHE will be carried out with battery operation in the future.

- Only green renewable electricity is used for charging (with the highest classification).
